Metaverse VR design, that’s not boring!

Metaverse VR design, that’s not boring!

What’s wrong with the design of your Metaverse VR experience?

Many VR experiences fail to get past the immersive or spatial engagement barriers inherent in VR. These barriers include navigation in 3D space, social interactions, object manipulation, discoverability, and more. As a result, many VR experiences are mildly interesting, somewhat engaging, and oftentimes confusing to figure out. This leads to boring VR experiences that offer fewer reasons to come back and make VR more of a freak show than a consistent channel to work and play. It’s also one of the key challenges to building a virtual community at scale, collectively described as the Metaverse. In this upcoming workshop, we will focus on Metaverse VR design.

What is the solution to boring VR design?

“Once upon a time…”, in short, story. Storytelling mechanisms are essential to creating emotional engagement with immersive content. They represent a packaging of content, or UI “story wrapper”. They can take a scene, object, or interaction and make it more engaging and fun for users. Many VR designers planning Metaverse content and experiences take storytelling for granted, often considering it a Category or genre item (that’s how it’s referred to in VR app stores). Instead, storytelling can be used as a way to engage users with micro-story interactions, ideal for immersive 3D UI’s.

In this upcoming workshop (part 1 of a 2-part workshop), we will design for and with storytelling techniques and create rapid “story prototypes” to test ideas quickly.
