The start of a new year seems like a good time to take inventory. This month, we cover ecosystem mapping (3 layers) for the emerging hot category of e-Mobility…Hint: Many governments around the world have amplified their commitments to e-mobility–electric charging stations and more. For example, one of the biggest is the US Postal Service vehicle electrification project. But what’s in this ecosystem? Beyond the vehicle charger, what actors and forces are at play? How can you understand it to potentially design products and services in this new pillar of the Green economy?
Note: Ecosystem mapping is critical in Service Design but can be used to understand UX and business environments generally, since these days products and services overlap (Prototyping Product-Service Systems Masterclass).
What you will learn in this ecosystem mapping workshop
Ecosystem mapping is a process for uncovering the wider environment of influences that are used to explore interconnections and opportunities. In this workshop, we will explore three key layers of an ecosystem: the business ecosystem, the user ecosystem, and the service ecosystem. A business ecosystem can contain players like suppliers, channels, and partners. The user ecosystem can contain other influencers or secondary users. The service ecosystem shows how customer interactions flow across touchpoints.
In this workshop, we will explore the ecosystem entities found in e-Mobility (electric mobility, such as electric cars, charging stations, batteries, etc). You will participate in an ecosystem mapping activity where we generate a visual diagram of the entities that make up the emerging e-Mobility ecosystem.
The output of the workshop, the ecosystem map, will show a network view of the dependencies and forces surrounding a product-service experience.
