What are ecosystems, and why map them?
Ecosystems surround product or service interactions between customers and the business. They can directly influence an experience such as delivery (as in supply chain shortage), societal (as in COVID-19) or political shifts (as in government policy changes impacting banking regulation changes). The European data protection policy (GDPR), for example, not only had an impact on websites and control over privacy but also influenced privacy approaches to product-service design.
Ecosystems are like doing an inventory of everything in your house that you currently own, rent, lease, or borrowed from a friend. Ecosystem exploration gives you a bigger-picture view of interdependencies and opportunities to partner with an external entity. For example, during COVID, competitors Apple and Google began collaborating on a privacy-by-design tack and trace app. The likelihood of such a collaboration would probably not have occurred if not for ecosystem tensions and focus on solving for the greater good that COVID afforded. Likewise, solving sustainability challenges will require an understanding of ecosytems both business and natural.
So knowing what’s in your ecosytem is helpful as a way to explore, understand and manage the wider forces impacting your service or product experience.
What you will learn in this ecosystem mapping workshop
Ecosystem mapping is a process for uncovering the wider environment of influences that are used to explore interconnections and opportunities. In this workshop, we will explore three key layers of an ecosystem: the business ecosystem, the user ecosystem, and the service ecosystem.A business ecosystem can contain players like suppliers, channels, and partners. The user ecosystem can contain other influencers or secondary users. The service ecosystem shows how customer interactions flow across touchpoints.
In this workshop, we will explore the ecosystem entities found in e-Mobility (electric mobility, such as electric cars, charging stations, batteries, etc). You will participate in an ecosystem mapping activity where we generate a visual diagram of the entities that make up the emerging e-Mobility ecosystem.
The output of the workshop, the ecosystem map, will show a network view of the dependencies and forces surrounding a product-service experience.
